Each Month, we recognize a different Healthy Dining Restaurant Champion in Massachusetts as part of Mass in Motion’s Healthy Dining Program. Healthy Dining restaurants develop and highlight healthier options for customers eating out and on the go. Healthy options include:
- At least two sides of fruits and/or vegetables
- Substitution of a salad (at no additional cost) or another vegetable for fries
- Low-fat or skim milk
- Tap water free of charge
- Half meal to-go or smaller portion sizes
In January, we took a trip to Malden and visited Dockside restaurant - a friendly neighborhood sports bar and grille that makes a perfect haven in the winter time for locals. Over a fresh Oriental chicken salad, restaurant marketing director Lisa Urbaczewski sat down to chat about her experience becoming a Mass in Motion Healthy Dining restaurant.
How long have you been part of the healthy dining program?
It’s been about two months at two of our locations in Malden. This April, we’re launching a whole new menu and working with one of our distributors to come up with a separate menu for healthy options. We’ll probably have 4-5 meals that are between 500-550 calories.
What motivated you to join the healthy dining program?
Since we’ve always had healthier options, it just kind of seemed like a natural fit. What’s motivating us to make even more changes is the basic call for it - we have way more customers coming in asking for healthier options now than we did five years ago.
Now, when customers come in, they can see the options on the menu as well as the Healthy Dining table tents Christina Murphy (Malden Mass in Motion Coordinator) gave us. That helps everyone become aware of our healthy options.
Which healthy menu options are most popular with your customers?
Our most popular item here would probably be the Turkey Tips or the Turkey Burger with Veggies. But all of our servers are educated on the different healthy options we have and know to offer fruit, vegetables or side salad substitutions. We have 1% milk available now as well.
What are customers saying about the program?
We’ve had some positive feedback, absolutely. As a bar and grille, there’s often a perception with our brand and menu that it’s not necessarily a healthy place to eat. But we do have those customers that come in looking for something they can have besides a burger and fries and they’re pleasantly surprised!
