Picture this.
You’re on the go, you’re really short on cash, and you’re hungry.
The closest, quickest, and cheapest option is your local convenience store. You think back to the last time you stopped into a convenience store. The shelves were stocked with pre-packaged, and processed foods full of sodium and sugar. You wish you had better options.
Well, now you do! As part of the new Mass in Motion Healthy Market Program, Energize Everett, an initiative of the City of Everett Health Department, joined forces with the owner of Supermercado Latino, Jorge Aguirre, to pilot a new initiative for healthy local convenience stores. The goal of the Healthy Market Program is to make fresh fruits and vegetables widely available and affordable.
Even First United Parish Church is pitching in to help with the effort! Starting in the Summer of 2013, you’ll start to see a fruit and vegetable stand outside the church. The more fresh fruits and vegetables available in Everett, the better!
Energize Everett will be working on expanding the number of healthy markets in Everett in the coming months. Ask your local convenience store to join the effort! They can contact Mary Brush at mary.brush@state.ma.us to learn more.
