Over recent years, the pomegranate has swum its way into the
mainstream as a coveted superfood full
of nutrients and vitamins. With a ½ cup of pom seeds packing a healthy helping
of vitamin c and protein (and only 72 calories) it’s no wonder why. But the
best part of the pomegranate package is that they’re delicious. If you aren’t
already hip to all that is pomegranate, a few simple tips will have you on your
way in no time!
How do I eat this thing? You want to eat the seeds inside the pomegranate, not the flesh (skin). At first, getting to the seeds may seem tricky – but it doesn’t have to be.
- First note: pomegranate juice will stain. Consider what you are wearing and where you de-seed your pomegranate.
- Next, cut the pomegranate in half, horizontally (parallel to the stem).
- Take one half into the palm of your hand, seed-side facing down.
- Over a bowl of water, tap with a spoon around the edges until all the seeds fall into the water.
- Discard the excess skin that floats to the top, then drain and rinse off the seeds. Pat dry and enjoy!
- Still confused? Check out this quick instructional video.
Pomegranate Possibilities. If you survived the de-seeding process, you’re ready to enjoy the wondrous world of the pomegranate! Here’s some of my favorite ideas.
- Squeeze your own juice (the redder and heavier
the fruit, the juicier it should be!):
- Own a juicer? Cut the pom in half and juice as normal. Strain through a cheesecloth.
- If you own a blender, pour in the seeds and use short pulses until it’s a liquid. Or, make your own Pomegranate Banana Smoothie.
- No juicing appliance in the kitchen? No problem. Place the seeds in a plastic freezer bag and use a rolling pin to go over them. Strain as necessary.
- Liven up a grain dish.
- Add to plain couscous, rice or hot oatmeal for a sweet and tangy twist.
- Try this unique rice pilaf dish: Barley & Wild Rice Pilaf with Pomegranate Seeds.
- Add some zing to your salsa:
- Sweet and spicy, here we come: Herbed Pomegranate Salsa.
- Don’t forget dessert!
- Whip up some beautiful and tasty pink-purple pomegranate frosting for these Healthy Almond Cupcakes.
