This is the latest in a series of posts highlighting each chapter of the "Health of Massachusetts", a comprehensive new report from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Chapter eight discusses the work of the Department’s Bureau of Environmental Health (BEH). BEH is responsible for collecting information on numerous environmental and health issues and investigating suspected increases in disease occurrence and their possible relationship to the environment.
The Department works closely with residents, communities, and local health officials across the state to evaluate contaminants in our air, water, soil and food supply. BEH also evaluates indoor air quality in public buildings, posts information on state beaches that are safe for swimming, and enforces regulations such as the state sanitary code.

In April,2010 the Town of Falmouth put their wind turbine #1 into operation. As an abutter at 1662 feet from the back of my home to the 1.65MW 400 foot tall windmill I can say we are being driven crazy by the noise generated by this machine. Anxiety, nervousness, hyper-arousal, insomnia, irritability, tiredness, and stress are what we have experienced by trying to live at this too close distance from the town's windmill. I write this in hopes that others faced
with the introduction of wind energy generation with a buffer of less than 1 to 1.25 miles will be more knowledgeable than I and my neighbors. We believed what we were told, we were lied to, and now I expect to be having to sell my home to get my sanity back.
