Once again, this week's report shows that the amount of flu-like illness in the state remains low and is consistent with what is expected for this time of year. While it is easy to assume that the flu is behind us, we remind everyone that flu season can last through the spring in Massachusetts. Therefore, we encourage everyone to get the H1N1 vaccine. It's widely available and you can find it at a clinic near you by visiting http://flu.masspro.org.

I have recently seen commercials on tv advertising free flu shots.Last week I went to a flu clinic listed on the State's web site. It was about 10 miles from my work or home location, but the closest listed to either. When I checked in I was informed that there was a $15.00 fee and worse that they would accept only cash or a check. Fortunately, it was in a location where I could make a small purchase and use my debit card to access the cash. I think that whoever is running the website should include that information in the listing. I had my insurance card and my HCSA card but could not use either one. ---------------------------------- DPH RESPONDS: Thanks for your comment. The H1N1 vaccine is free at all public clinics, such as those sponsored by local community health centers or local departments of public health. Doctor's offices are also offering the vaccine free of charge, however, you may be responsible for a co-pay at your visit - as you would at any other appointment. Finally, pharmacies are offering the vaccine free of charge, however, they may charge you for the administration fee, which is what it sounds like happened in your case.
