Trekking Life

These are very good questions to ask one or oneself if interested in pedaling to work and doing it in winter too. I would have to say that it is not for everyone and those who are fortunate enough to even have the option should take it.

No, this isn't a dumb question at all! Most people can exercise safely in cold temperatures. To be safe, I would suggest checking with your doctor first if you have existing health concerns.

There are some things you can do to stay safe when exercising in cold temperatures and to make the most of your winter-time workouts:
1. Wear layers. As you start working out, your body temperature will increase, and you can start peeling off layers as you warm up. Don't forget to protect your head, hands + feet in particular.
2. Wear safety gear. If it's dark out, wear reflective clothing or bands. Wear helmets when skiing or snowboarding and make sure your footwear has good traction to prevent falls. If you're riding your bike at night, make sure your bike (or helmet) has a light.
3. Wear sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of at least 15. Use lipbalm with sunscreen and dark glasses or goggles to protect your lips and eyes.
4. Pay attention to the windchill. If the temperature goes below zero degrees (F), I'd say it's time to choose an indoor activity.
5. Drink lots of fluids to stay hydrated.

Hopefully these tips will help you enjoy staying active through the winter months.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but does the cold weather influence the lungs in a negative way while exercising? Maybe just an old wives tale, but I always thought it could present health problems in really cold temps. Is there a threshold where it's not safe for older folk?
