This past Sunday (October 11th), Paul A. Offit, chief of the infectious diseases division of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and author of “Autism’s False Prophets: Bad Science, Risky Medicine and the Search for a Cure”, published an Op-Ed in The New York Times titled "Nothing to Fear but the Flu Itself." Dr. Offit writes, "public health officials are now battling not only a fast-spreading influenza virus but also unfounded fears about the vaccine that can prevent it." He goes on to debunk some of the popular H1N1 vaccine myths, such as the vaccine is unsafe and untested and contains a dangerous preservative.
We encourage everyone to take a moment and read Dr. Offit's piece and remember, the best way to prevent seasonal and H1N1 influenza is with the vaccine.

DPH RESPONDS: Thank you for your question. There are a few simple steps that everyone can take to help prevent getting and spreading the flu this season.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand gel.
• Cough or sneeze into a tissue or into the inside of your elbow if you don’t have a tissue.
• Always wash your hands before touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
• Stay home from work and school if you get sick with a flu-like illness and avoid contact with others so the virus does not spread.
